Discovery spinal conservative care programme

Discovery’s Spinal Conservative Care Programme is a pre-authorised, non-surgical treatment pathway that supports patients with back or neck pain. It focuses on early, evidence-based conservative care—including physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation, education, and pain management—to help patients recover without needing invasive procedures.

The programme is based on international best practices that show active rehabilitation and patient education are often more effective (and safer) than relying on scans, injections, or surgery in the early stages of spinal pain.

Once enrolled on the programme, you will be assigned 8 sessions with a physio. This is of no charge to you as it comes from your risk benefit and not your day to day savings.

First step is to do an assessment with a GP or neurosurgeon who is registered on the programme. If your Dr isn’t registered, we can recommend one for you. There is no charge to you for this assessment.

Once approved, you can book an appointment with us or contact us. Please specify that you have registered on the programme.

We will need to get your consent to access your records on Discovery’s website This will be done via sms. Please make sure that your cell number is correct with Discovery.

Your first session with your physio will be an assessment. Please be aware that there may not be time for treatment in this session (depends how long it takes).

After your assessment, we will develop a treatment plan and decide how often you need to see your physio.

You should also receive a confirmation email from discovery. Please forward this to us.

You have 12 weeks to complete the programme.

We will submit to Discovery on your behalf.

Payment does not affect your day to day savings as the programme is a stand alone benefit offered by Discovery medical aid.

Please note that if you do not complete your final assessment within the 12 weeks, Discovery will not pay for your programme and you will be liable for payment.

All plans cover the spinal programme except:

Workability BNAP programme

(Wooltru, GEMS, Old Mutual, Bestmed, Compcare, SABMAS, Tiger brands, Massmart, Polmed, Profmed)

The Back & Neck Assistance Programme (BNAP) is a physiotherapy and rehabilitation program focused on helping individuals with chronic back and neck pain improve their function and return to work and life. It’s an early intervention, functional rehabilitation program driven by physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and doctors. BNAP aims to address the root cause of pain, improve function, and enhance the overall quality of life for those experiencing chronic back and neck pain.

Simply call us and we will register you on the programme.

The following criteria apply:

  • Persistent back or neck pain (more than 3 months)
  • Difficulty performing activities of daily living or engaging in meaningful life activities
  • Sought previous medical attention, or have not been able to due to lack of funds
  • Ready to participate in an active rehab programme

We will submit a request to your medical aid. They will contact you so please expect their call (they will not authorise you if that can not contact you). Once they approve it, we need to give you forms for your Dr to do an assessment to say you are medically well enough to do the programme. Please NOTE that the Dr must not invoice you or the medical aid but they can invoice us directly according to the BNAP rates and we will pay them. Alternatively ask us for one of our preapproved Drs that understand the programme.

We can then go ahead with an initial assessment (INA) with your physio. This is a comprehensive assessment and takes some time. We will send you some questionnaires to complete before hand. This will help shorten the time it takes.

It is also worth thinking about listing the functional problems you have and the goals you would like to be able achieve at the end of the programme.

The results of your assessment will determine your “stratification” which determines how many sessions you will be assigned. This can be 1, 6 or 12.

Please not that there may not be time for any treatment in the first session.

Once the INA has been submitted online, we have to wait until workability have quality controlled it. Once this is complete, we can proceed with your assigned sessions.

Your therapist will discuss with you how often you should attend sessions. Depending on your medical aid, the programme usually needs to be completed within 6 months.

Depending on how many sessions you have been assigned, there may be a midway assessment but always a discharge assessment to see your progress and if you have met your goals.

There will also be follow up calls to check how you are doing after you finish the programme.

The process is slightly different for BESTMED. For BESTMED patients, you must first complete the assessment with your Dr and your physio before we can request authorisation. If BESTMED deny your application, you will be liable to pay for you assessment.  This will be charged at our normal practice rate and paid to us directly. If you have day-to-day savings, you can claim it back from BESTMED.
